Founded in 1984, the major work of the Jesuit Communication Project (JCP) is to encourage,
promote, and develop Media Education in schools across Canada.
Media education is concerned with helping students develop an informed and critical
understanding of the nature of the mass media, the techniques used by the media industry,
and the impact of these techniques. Media literacy also aims to provide students with the
ability to create their own media products.
The Jesuit Communication Project provides a variety of resources and services for
teachers, parents, church groups, school boards, students, and other interested groups.
The JCP offers workshops and talks on many media topics. Such presentations have been
given across Canada, in Australia, Europe, and the USA at in-services, conferences, and
conventions. The project provides a consultancy service for the media industry, schools,
churches, and other social agencies throughout the world. The JCP is a media education
consultant for CHUM Television, The Alliance for Children and Television, The Media
Awareness Network, and other groups.
The JCP has over 3,500 books and periodicals on the media. Files of materials and
resources on media education programs from around the world and numerous clippings on a
variety of media topics are also available for researchers. Twice a year, the Project
publishes Clipboard, a newsletter on media education activities around the world.
The Project has helped organize major North American conferences on media education. The
JCP has also produced the award winning teaching kit Scanning Television consisting
of four videos and a study guide. Most recently, the JCP created and produces the
successful monthly television program Scanning the Movies on Canada's BRAVO!
network.
